The Truth About Parabens: Are They Really the Bad Guys?

You’ve seen it a hundred times — bottles proudly declaring “paraben-free!” like it’s a badge of honor. But what exactly are parabens? And should you really be running from them like they’re the villains of your skincare routine?

Let’s pop this bubble once and for all, shall we? 🫧

What Are Parabens, Anyway?

Parabens are preservatives — the quiet heroes that keep your lotions, scrubs, and soaps fresh and free from mold and bacteria. 🧪 Without them, your products could turn into science experiments long before you’ve had time to enjoy them.

They’ve been used safely in cosmetics for decades. But when a few studies suggested parabens might affect hormones (at very high concentrations), they suddenly became public enemy number one in the beauty world. Cue dramatic music. 🎭

Here’s the truth: both the FDA and European Commission still approve parabens for cosmetic use — and closely monitor ongoing research.

So Why the “Paraben-Free” Craze?

Because fear sells. “Chemical-free” sounds comforting — even though everything, including water, is a chemical.

Once the buzz began, brands rushed to create “paraben-free” formulas, replacing parabens with other preservatives. Some of those alternatives are great. Others? Let’s just say not all replacements play nicely with your skin.

Why Parabens Aren’t the Real Villains

At Douglas-Smith Soap Co., safety isn’t a trend — it’s a promise.

We care about what goes on your skin and what goes into your products. Whether we’re working with ingredients derived from nature or blending skin-safe fragrances, every choice we make is based on science, not scare tactics.

And here’s the thing: we work with concentrated ingredients every day. We’re not going to harm ourselves — and we’d never risk the skin of the people who trust us most — you.

So when you see “paraben-free,” smile knowingly. Parabens aren’t monsters — they’re just misunderstood.

How to Spot Parabens on a Label

ree

Parabens are easy to identify once you know their calling card — they all end in “-paraben.”

Common examples include:

  • Methylparaben – found in lotions and shampoos

  • Propylparaben – keeps whipped body butters stable

  • Ethylparaben – protects against bacteria

  • Butylparaben – a stronger preservative for rinse-off products

If your product label lists any of these, you’ve found one of the preservative squad keeping your skincare safe.

Other Preservatives to the Rescue: Modern Alternatives

Not all preservatives are created equal. If you know you’re allergic to parabens or you’d still rather play it safe, today’s options are thankfully better than ever. Here’s a few:

  • Optiphen – paraben-free, gentle, and great for lotions or serums.

  • GeoGuard – powerful, broad-spectrum protection that keeps formulas safe and stable.

  • Leucidal Liquid SF – a naturally derived option made from fermented radish root.

Why use them:

  • Safety first: Any product with water (like creams or gels) needs protection from bacteria and mold.

  • Shelf life: Preservatives prevent spoilage and waste.

  • Gentle & effective: Ideal for sensitive skin and “clean” beauty fans.

What About Preservative-Free Products?

We make anhydrous moisturizers — products without water — here preservatives can be optional, especially when they move off the shelf quickly and a few simple habits are followed during use.

Keep them fresh and fabulous by:

  • Storing out of the bathroom (humidity = bacteria’s best friend).

  • Using within a year for best results and

  • Avoiding the introduction of water during use - keep them anhydrous.

Here's some examples of our anhydrous moisturizers:

Even without preservatives, a little care goes a long way to keep your skin glowing safely.

Why Parabens Don’t Belong in Fragrance Oils

We’ve had customers ask us before if our fragrances are paraben free.

Here’s a fun fact: fragrance oils don’t need parabens. There’s no water for bacteria to grow in! It’s like wearing cowboy boots to go swimming — not wrong, just unnecessary.

So when you see “paraben-free fragrance oil,” you can laugh a little. It’s technically true… but a bit like calling celery “sugar-free.” 🥬

Furthermore, made the right way, cold process soap stays fresh on its own. Its natural alkalinity keeps it safe and stable without any extra chemicals.

It’s why you won't find preservatives in your handcrafted, Douglas-Smith soap as well as our other anhydrous soaks, moisturizers and/or candles.
